If you're looking up "how to make your own card game," you've probably already found two conflicting schools of thought. One says grab a standard deck and print stickers. The other says you need a die cutter, a Pantone book, and a vendor who can hit a Delta E of 2. Both are right—actually, for different situations.
I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at a company that produces printed collateral for amusement and casino venues. I review every deliverable before it reaches customers—roughly 200 unique items a year. I've rejected about 15% of first deliveries over the last 12 months due to color, cardstock, or finishing issues. That number doesn't make me popular, but it has taught me a lot about how card games go wrong.
The core lesson: the best process for making a card game depends on who's going to use it and what happens if it fails. So instead of one universal guide, here are three scenarios.
Simple rule I use on every review: if the physical product feels cheap, the game has to be twice as good to compensate.
Scenario A: It's for Your Family, Your Friends, or a Single Event
If you're making a custom deck for a birthday, a reunion, a classroom, or just to play a classic trick-taker like Oh Hell or Booray with your group, you don't need a commercial printer. You need a functional prototype and a bit of patience.
- Use 300 DPI at final card size. A standard poker card is 2.5 x 3.5 inches, so your image should be at least 750 x 1050 pixels. If you start with a smaller image, the print will look soft—maybe okay on a screen, not okay in your hand.
- Don't obsess over Pantone. On a home printer, color matching is a fantasy (sorry). It's fine. The family won't notice a 5% magenta shift.
- Print one test page and put it in a sleeve with a real card behind it. Does it feel flimsy? Yes. That's what sleeves are for.
- If you want something sturdier without a full print run, use a print-on-demand card game service. Most of these accept a 750 x 1050 image and handle the cardstock for you.

Scenario B: You're Making a Small Commercial Run (or a Promo Deck)
Now you're playing a different game. Maybe you've designed a party game and want 200 units to sell at a convention. Or you're a restaurant owner who wants a branded Oh Hell or Booray deck on every table. The biggest mistake I see is treating a print file like a finished product. Most first-time makers focus on the card face art and completely miss the box, the cardstock, and the finish. A deck that feels flimsy can ruin a great game.
It's tempting to think you can send a PDF to an online printer and get back a deck that matches your screen. In reality, the same file can print noticeably different on different machines. The printer's "soft proof" is just a preview—not a promise.
What to do instead:
- Order a physical proof, not just a PDF. It costs $15–30 (which, honestly, feels annoying until the first time it saves you from a 1,000-deck disaster).
- Ask whether your file has been converted from RGB to CMYK. If your design uses a strong brand color, ask the printer if they can match a Pantone reference. Pantone colors don't always have exact CMYK equivalents; a Delta E below 2 is the usual threshold for brand-critical color, and anything above 4 is visible to most people.
- Specify cardstock and finish. For a standard deck, 300 gsm cardstock with a matte or linen finish is common. Glossy can look vibrant, but it shows fingerprints and smudges faster—especially on a table where people are eating and drinking.
- Don't forget the box. A tuck box should be at least 80 lb cover, which is roughly 216 gsm. If the box feels like copy paper, the whole product feels cheap. (And your customers will judge the cards before they even open it.)
For a sanity check on pricing: online printers are currently listing mid-range 500-card business cards around $35–60, double-sided, before shipping (January 2025 figures). A fully custom 54-card deck with a box and a proof will cost several times that. If a quote is dramatically lower, ask what's missing.
Scenario C: You Need a Branded Production for a Commercial Venue
This is where the process gets serious. If you're producing a card game for an arcade, a casino, a corporate entertainment center, or a licensed brand, the stakes are no longer "will my family laugh at the inside jokes?" The question is: "Will this product survive thousands of hands—and will it represent the brand correctly?"
Commercial operators should think about the supply chain the way big entertainment companies do. Look at how Konami handles physical merchandise: the official Konami Shop carries a wide range of branded goods, and the common thread is consistent quality. You won't find a flimsy deck on the shelf. That consistency doesn't happen by accident—it happens because every vendor contract includes explicit specs and approval gates.
The Konami 2020 Q2 report gaming titles list is another useful example. It covers everything from arcade cabinets to casino systems, but the brand voice is consistent across each environment. A custom card game for a venue is the same: it's a physical touchpoint that either strengthens or weakens the operator's brand.
At this level, I recommend four things:
- Put tolerance specs in the contract. Don't just say "quality cardstock." Specify weight, coating, corner radius, and color tolerance. I once received a batch of 8,000 cards where the corner radius was visibly inconsistent—cards with different-sized corners in the same box. Normal tolerance is small; this was not. The vendor redid it at their cost. Now our contracts include corner radius as a line item.
- Set up a digital proofing workflow. Efficiency is a competitive advantage. We switched to a version-controlled online proofing system in 2022, and it cut our revision cycle from five days to two. That's not about rushing—it's about reducing the number of times a file gets lost or mislabeled. Traditional printing still has its place; the efficiency gain is in catching mistakes earlier.
- Treat regulatory compliance as part of quality. For casino and arcade card products, there may be requirements around card dimensions, opacity, or marking detection. I'm not 100% sure about every jurisdiction's rules—this is where your own due diligence matters—but the vendor should be able to certify their manufacturing process.
- Order a pilot run before the full batch. A pilot of 50–100 decks lets you test the actual playing feel, the box durability, and the color under venue lighting. If you skip this to save a week, you might spend a month fixing a problem that a pilot would've caught.
There's a reason the Konami Shop and other official direct sales channels feel cohesive: they've standardized the spec sheet. You don't need to be that big to use the same principle.
How to Decide Which Scenario You're In
If you're still unsure, answer three questions:
- How many units are you printing? Under 50? Go with Scenario A. Between 50 and 5,000? Scenario B. Above that or for a licensed/commercial venue? Scenario C.
- Who is the final decision maker? If it's just you, Scenario A. If it's your customers, Scenario B. If it's a brand manager, an arcade operator, or a casino procurement lead, you're in Scenario C.
- What's the failure cost? A cheap deck at game night gets a shrug. A cheap deck in a venue gets a complaint, a refund, and possibly a lost account. The higher the failure cost, the more process you need.
And if you're not sure? Start with the smallest run that lets you test the real product. The fastest way to ruin a card game idea is to order 2,000 copies before you've played with one finished deck. I've seen that happen more times than I'd like to count (and every time, the explanation is the same: "we wanted to save time").
